A Night to Remember: Peak Education’s 25th Anniversary “Under the Stars” Celebration

August 29, 2024

On the evening of August 29th, Peak Education celebrated 25 years of breaking down barriers, building futures, and empowering students with its “Under the Stars” Anniversary Celebration. Peak Education and their supporters came together to honor the visionaries who blazed the trail of Peak Education's growth—Dr. H. Dalton Conner, Steven Mullens, and Rick Price—with a simple goal to help raise funds to sustain the founders enduring flame and support the growth of their organization. Or as the founders would say "to stop talent from being wasted."

While the event was originally planned for the outdoors, Mother Nature had other plans, and the venue was switched to an indoor setting. Despite the unexpected change, it was ultimately a memorable evening filled with history, inspiration, and the spirit of resilience that defines Peak Education.

The Journey Begins: A Toast to the Past

The evening began with an intimate cocktail hour, where guests mingled and reflected on the incredible journey of Peak Education. Historical photos showcased the organization's humble beginnings and its evolution over the years. These images told a story of grit and determination, highlighting the pioneering efforts of Dr. H. Dalton Conner, Steven Mullens, and Rick Price, whose shared vision in 1999 sparked what would become a life-changing force in the Pikes Peak region.

Throughout the evening, the spirit of Dr. Conner, Steven, and Rick was felt deeply in the conversations and reflections shared by alumni, mentors, and community leaders. The stories that echoed through the room were not just about the past, but a living, breathing testament to the lasting legacy these founders have created. As Peak Education looks to the future, it’s clear that the flame they lit continues to guide and inspire new generations of scholars and leaders in our community.

Guests were soon ushered into the main hall, where the evening’s program began. Jesse Perez, a long-time alumni of Peak Education, took the stage and shared a personal story about how the program helped him shape his future. His words set the tone for the evening—one of reflection, gratitude, and an unwavering commitment to education. Jesse’s story was a poignant reminder of the impact Peak Education has on the lives of its students, and how it continues to inspire them long after they graduate.

Eric Reyes: A Story of Resilience and Hope

Closing the night out, Eric Reyes, a current Peak Education scholar in the College Success Program, took the stage. Eric’s story was one of both heartache and hope. He shared the deeply personal experience of losing his father at just seven years old, and how the loss of his father shaped much of his early life. Despite the grief and struggles, Eric found a path forward with the guidance and support of Peak Education.

His speech was a powerful testament to the resilience that Peak Education fosters in its students. Eric spoke candidly about the challenges he faced—both in school and in life—and how Peak Education helped him stay on track. He shared the story of his first encounter with Peak Education, describing how he initially felt he wasn’t the ideal candidate for the program. Yet, he was accepted, and that decision changed the course of his life.

Eric went on to speak about the pivotal moments in his journey, from learning how to navigate college applications with the help of Peak Education mentors like Ms. Rainey, Peak Education's Director of Access and Success to finding a sense of belonging and purpose at CSU Pueblo. Despite setbacks, including financial obstacles that kept him from attending his first-choice school, Eric expressed deep gratitude for the mentorship and opportunities Peak Education provided him along the way.

He also shared how his passion for giving back led him to mentor younger Peak Education students, ensuring that the next generation of scholars has the same opportunities to succeed. Eric’s speech concluded with a powerful Bible verse, Jeremiah 29:11, which reads: "For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." His belief that Peak Education is part of God’s plan for his life was a moving reminder of the incredible potential within every student the program touches.

A Future of Possibility: Keeping the Flame Alive

As the evening drew to a close, the energy in the room was palpable. Guests were reminded of the power of community, the importance of mentorship, and the indelible mark Peak Education has made on the lives of its students. The celebration was a testament to the unwavering commitment of everyone involved—mentors, donors, alumni, and current students—who make Peak Education the transformative organization it is today.

The “Keep the Flame Alive” message resonated throughout the evening, as attendees were encouraged to continue supporting Peak Education’s work in the years to come.
